Dietetic Principles
—Swami Sivananda—

    • Eat when you are really hungry. Beware of false hunger.

    • Eat less, masticate more. Chew every morsel of food 30 times. Do not eat rapidly.

    • Fast once a week. Fasting eliminates the poison, overhauls the internal mechanism of the body and gives rest to the organs.

    • Do not overload the stomach. Take moderate (neither too much nor too little) diet. Stop eating when three quarters of the stomach is full.

    • Include always some raw vegetables (like, cucumber and radish) in your food.

    • Eat only four or five kinds of food at one meal. Avoid too many mixtures and combinations.

    • Take only ripe fruits.

    • Do not take tinned fruits. Do not overcook vegetables. Do not throw away the water in which rice and vegetables are boiled. Drink this water.

    • Do not eat when you are angry.

    • Do not take food when the breath is passing through the left nostril.

    • Take food as a medicine. Give up gluttony.

    • Do not eat between meals. Do not drink water when you are taking food. Do not eat late at night.

    • Take food at fixed hours. Take only two meals.

    • Talk less or observe silence while you take food.

    • Do not do strenuous work—physical or mental just after taking food. Take rest for half an hour.

    • Remember God before, during and after meals. God is the dwells in all foods and vegetables.
