—Swami Sivananda—
Let us begin the description of vitamin A by the following song sung by this vitamin itself:
I am Vitamin A, enemy of germs.
I live in milk, butter and curd.
I keep the skin healthy.
I remove night-blindness.
If you miss me in your food,
I will give you bad eyesight.
I am needed for growth and repair of the body.
I will make your skin beautiful.
I will give you good eyesight.
Nursing mother need me more
To keep their children healthy and strong.
Good bye, dear children! Be cheerful!
I shall meet you again at the dining table.
Main sources of Vitamin A are: milk, curd, butter, ghee, sprouted grains (especially sprouted pulses and gram), green vegetables, leafy vegetables, coriander leaves, celery leaves, beans, peas, cabbage, broccoli, potatoes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, yellow and orange coloured vegetables (such as ripe pumpkins and carrots), ripe fruits (such as mangoes, papayas, oranges, etc.), bananas, apricots, peaches, yellow maize, unpolished rice, groundnut oil, coconut oil and Red palm oil.
