—Sri Swami Sivananda—
Meat-eating is not only unhygienic but often dangerous. This is not only unnecessary but also unnatural. This is a violation of moral law. Butchery encourages meat-eating. Butchery is a disgrace to civilisation.
Many doctors forbid their patients to eat animal flesh not only as a means of cure of such diseases as gout, rheumatism, etc. but also as a preventive against diseases of many kinds including consumption, appendicitis and cancer.
Meat-eating is not at all necessary for keeping up health. Rather it is deleterious to health. It brings host of ailments such as tapeworm, albuminuria and diseases of the kidneys.
If you want to stop eating meat, just go to a slaughterhouse and see with your own eyes the pitiable and struggling condition of the animal which is being butchered. This will arouse mercy and sympathy in your heart. Or, go to a butcher’s shop and personally see the
disgusting rotten muscles, intestines, kidneys and other nasty parts of the animals. This will induce a strong disgust and hatred for the habit of meat-eating.
When man abandons flesh foods and eats fruits, grains, nuts, vegetables, honey and milk, we shall find a large number of diseases disappearing. People will have more power of endurance and attain longevity. The vegetarian diet produces power of both the mind and the body.
It is a serious mistake to believe that meat can make good fighting men. That a non-meat diet can make good soldiers is beyond a shadow of a doubt.
All slaughterhouses should be closed for good. Use of animal flesh as food should be absolutely given up. Man is a fruit-eating creature. He differs completely from carnivorous animals in respect of his internal organs, teeth and external appearance. Anatomically he is allied to anthropoid apes whose diet consists of fruits, cereals and nuts.
Meat generates diseases, excites passion and produces restless mind. Therefore, my children! Abandon meat, live on vegetarian diet and take plenty of fruits.
