—Swami Sivananda—
FTake Sattvic food. Give up chillies, tamarind, garlic, onion, sour articles, oil, mustard, asafoetida. Observe moderation in diet (do not take too much or too little of food). Give up those things which the mind likes best for a fortnight in a year. Eat simple food. Milk and fruits help concentration. Take food as medicine to keep the life going. Eating for enjoyment is sin. Give up salt and sugar for a month. Do not ask for extra salt for Dal (cooked pulse) and extra sugar for milk.
Commentary: Eat to live. Do not live to eat. Food sustains life and contributes to health. All your life you have to be eating food. There is a constant relationship of man with food. Food effects your body and mind. Therefore it is important to know what to eat and what not to eat. Draw up a dietetic regimen and follow it. Have control over your tongue. Don't be obsessed with the thought of food.
--Commentary by Swami Chidananda
Note: Sattvic food contains eatables which are juicy, fatty, wholesome, digestible and freshly cooked. Milk, butter, fresh fruits, green vegetables, barley, wheat and rice are some of the sources of Sattvic food. Sattvic food should never be excessively bitter, sour, saline, hot, pungent, dry or burning.
