EVIL HABITS

—Sri Swami Sivananda—

Dear children, this is an age of scientific inventions. But this is also an age of cinemas, radios, novel-reading, fashions and false notions. Evil habits of all sorts have cropped up in all societies. For example, a friend greets another friend not with the names of God but with a packet of cigarettes. He says, “Come along Mr. ............, have a smoke, have a peg of whisky.”
Bear in mind, my children, alcohol is such a bad devil that if once it enters the system of man, it never leaves him. He becomes a confirmed drunkard. Alcohol is a deadly poison that destroys the brain cells and nerves.

Another evil habit is smoking which is so very common all the world over. Habitual smokers bring very clever arguments to support their case. They say, “Smoking keeps the bowels clean. I get a good motion in the morning after smoking. It is exhilarating to the lungs, brain and heart.” Smoking, beware my boys, brings nicotine poisoning of the whole system. It brings irritable heart, and many diseases of the eyes.
Betel-chewing is another evil habit. Those who chew betels cannot pronounce words properly. Their tongue becomes thick.

People consume opium, Charas and Ganja to keep up their spirits but as a matter of fact they poison their system and make themselves unfit for any kind of work.

The habit of novel-reading fills the mind with base and lustful thoughts and excites passion.
Then the other evil habit is drinking tea, coffee etc. In happy moderation tea or coffee helps hard-working people. But the thing is that man loses his will-power and finds it hard to resist falling into immoderation. Then comes the whole trouble. He becomes a slave to these drinks. If he can remain as a master and can give up  drinking them at any time, there is no harm.
The vast majority of people have got the evil habit of using vulgar words during their conversation, especially when they become excited and angry. A man of refined taste, culture and polish can never utter such words.

So my dear children, have a strong will to give up these habits immediately. The habit of slowly giving up by gradual reduction generally turns out to be unsuccessful. Beware of recurrences. Resolutely set your face against them when they try to re-appear. Shun bad company of those who have these evil habits.
