This is the story of an Indian sage Dadhichi of great antiquity.
The demon Vrittrasura used to torment the gods. They were not able to vanquish him. God advised them, “You can kill this demon only with a weapon made of the bones of some saintly person. These days the austere spiritual practices done by Dadhichi are known all around. Who else can be more saintly than him? Go to him and beg for his body from him”.
The gods approached Sage Dadhichi and narrated to him the sad stories of the sufferings caused by Vrittrasura. On hearing those stories he was in great anguish. He said, “Let me know how I can be of any help to you”.
The gods said, “Please give us your body. We shall kill Vrittrasura with a weapon made of the bones of your body”.
The sage replied with unruffled calm, “I have devoted my mind to God. My body is at the disposal of those for whom it may be of any use. I gladly allow you to use this body for their sake”.
After saying this he stopped breathing and departed from this life voluntarily.
A ‘Vajra’ (a strong weapon) was made of his bones. Vrittrasura was killed with that weapon. The gods and the whole society were freed from the demon’s terror.
We must concern ourselves about others’ welfare like Sage Dadhichi. We should be prepared to sacrifice our lives for abating their grief and doing away with the feelings of insecurity prevailing in the society.
