—Narrated by Swami Vimalananda
—
A boy was sitting on the beach of a lake. His axe was lying close to him. All of a sudden, the axe fell into the lake at a slight push of his hand. The boy began to weep. He prayed to God fervently for the recovery of his axe. His prayer was answered and God appeared from the water with an axe of gold.
"Take, my boy, your axe,” said God.
The boy looked at the axe and said, "No, this is not mine. My axe was made of iron."
God entered into the water and re-appeared with an axe of silver.
"Take, my boy, your axe," said God.
God again entered into the water and re-appeared with the iron axe of the boy.
The boy's eyes gleamed with joy. He said, "Yes, this is my axe."
God gave him his axe. The boy stood up to go.
God said, "My boy, you can't go with this axe alone. You overcame the temptation of gold and silver. You spoke the truth. Take with you the gold and silver axes too in reward for your truthfulness.”
And, the boy who had lost one axe got the three axes!
With all love and Om.
